Blooming primroses are such a bright, cheery sight in the spring. They do make my heart smile when I look at them!
Primroses are a perennial plant, coming back every year, making an ever bigger clump. They grow from fibrous roots.
Primroses bloom in the early spring, sometimes blooming sporadically through the summer.
Primroses are hardy and adaptable, growing from zone 3 to 8.
The naturalized, heirloom primrose is found growing in damp woodland setting, and that is the setting that they like to grow best in.
They like a lightly shaded area, with a rich, well- drained soil that is amended with organic matter.
Primroses can be grown from seed that will need to be started indoors in late winter for planting out in the spring.
I prefer to buy the plants from a nursery and plant them out after enjoying their colorful blooms indoors during late winter.
The roots can be dug and divided after blooming to produce many more plants. This is how I have multiplied my plants.
Space the plants 6 to 12 inches apart. They can be used in beds and borders.
Primroses are low growing perennials and I like to use them to line the front of the garden beds, they are lovely bordering a walkway.
Primroses come in a variety of forms, sizes and colors. The variety of colors range from white, cream, yellow, orange, pink, purple, red and even blue. There are multicolored varieties.
After blooming, mulch the plants, keep them well watered and weeded, pruning off the dying leaves and spent flowers to keep tidy looking.
Snails and slugs do like primrose and sometimes they can be a problem. They are also susceptible to root and crown rot if the the soil is not well draining.

I will be digging and dividing my primroses this late spring/early summer. The colors that I have are the ones in the photos above-true yellow, and a dark pink with a yellow eye. If anyone would be liking a start of them, just let me know in the comments and I will get it to you!
