Shall we talk about this summer’s vegetable garden?
photo from Facebook!
(sadly, not from my garden!)
Well, for me there was not one!
It has been years since I have not had a vegetable garden, and what a strange feeling it has been. I tell ya, I was pretty desperate for some sun-ripened tomatoes about the middle of August, and was ready to beg for someone to have mercy on me!
Bless Maria’s heart! She gladly shared with her deprived Mom! Baskets of tomatoes, bags of squash and green beans. So, I was able to enjoy the wonderful, fresh taste of summer after all.
I had toyed with the idea of planting some tomatoes and squash in tubs on the driveway in our temporary home, but it was just not working out. I would drive by beautiful vegetable gardens on our drives and be envious.
There WILL be vegetable gardens for me next year -tho not real sure how. Am planning and working on it. Plan to build some raised beds. I am curious to see what and how much I can grow in town. (I am still wondering how I got here!)
So, in the meantime, for this summer, I am gardening vicariously thru Maria’s garden. (She probably wishes I would help instead of just watching!) She DOES grow a beautiful garden!
Buckets of beautiful green beans, from 1 picking.
Maria, busy snapping those buckets of beans…
with her faithful kitty, Smokey.
She canned a total of 96 quarts of green beans.
And ….39 pints of hot pepper jelly, 23 pints of salsa, 6 bags broccoli, 17 bags cauliflower, 47 bags corn, 60 quarts peaches, 42 bags blueberries, and 11 quarts venison.
(It exhausts me just thinking about all that work!)
That should take care of their family this winter!
And, if we get hungry this winter, we know where to go!
So, I am curious….
Did you grow a vegetable garden this year?
How did it do?
